The Cutchi Memon Association was established in 1948. The prospects of the Cutchi Memon community in Cochin at that time were bleak. In the absence of proper leadership and owing to lack of unity the community was in a doldrums.
The Cutchi Memon Community of Cochin which was predominantly business – oriented had not been far–sighted enough to receive the importance of encouraging academic education among the younger generation. As far as education was concerned the community was backward. Very few boys completed school education while girls seldom saw the gates of schools; they were content with Madrassa education.
The condition of the poor was even more pitiable. One of the gravest problems confronting the underprivileged section of the community was the burial of the dead. Whenever death struck the house of a poor brother, he had to approach a number of his more privileged brethren to raise the amount required for a decent burial. With the amount thus raised he had to enquire and get all the things required which in turn led to considerable difficulties and undue delay.
With the objectives of overcoming these and several other problems and to raise the community from its long slumber and decay a band of youngsters under the leadership of Mr. Abdul Azeez Zackaria Sait (who expired at Mecca in 1951) formed the ‘Cutchi Memon Association’. From the year of its inception to the present day the Association has steadfast for the implementation of its programs overcoming all obstacles that cropped up time and again during the span of the last 61 years.
The Cutchi Memon Association has attached great importance to education. It has given aid in the form of stipends, scholarships, books, etc. to all deserving school and college going boys and girls. The number of doctors, engineers and other graduates who have come up with its help are living testimony to the services rendered in the field of education by the Association.
So also arrangements have been made by the Association to render funeral services by maintaining a stock of all the required items. While the actual expenses are recovered from those who can afford it, the items and services are rendered free of cost for the poor.
In this manner the Association has so far spent lakhs of rupees towards educational aid and to meet the funeral expenses of the poor during the last 61 years of its existence.
The office of the Association is situated at the premises of ‘Shadi Mahal’ which is managed by the Association. The Cutchi Memon Association has been instrumental in the formation and working of various healthy activities in the community. The re-constitution of Cutchi Memon Jamat, formation of Memon Youth Forum and Muslim Ladies Association were all formed with the active help and co-operation of the Association and the ‘Shadi Mahal’ has been allotted free of rent for holding the meetings and functions of these associate organisations.
The Association is also taking keen interest and participation in all activities of the community. Under the auspices of the Association send–off parties are arranged in honour of the Cutchi Memons who go for the Haj pilgrimage from Cochin every year. In each and every marriage in the community the bridegroom is congratulated on behalf of the Association. So also for every death in the community condolence resolutions are passed at the meetings of the Association and copies sent to the bereaved families.
During the month of Ramzan the distribution of ‘Zakath’ to deserving members etc. have the active co-operation of this Association. Besides, many new projects have also been taken up by the Association lately. A fund has been set apart each year for rendering financial assistance for the marriage requirements of poor girls of the community. Free medical camps were also conducted under the auspices of the Association.
In 1976 the Association celebrated its silver jubilee when various competitions were conducted for the members of the community. The celebration culminated with a grand meeting and cultural programs. In 1978, the Association constructed in the front portion of the compound a Silver Jubilee Hall annexed to the Shadi Mahal for giving better facilities to the public of Cochin for marriages, meetings and other functions. ‘Shadi Mahal’ situated in the heart of the city is rendering yeomen service to the citizens of Cochin. In 1998 the Association celebrated the Golden Jubilee with various competitions and released a souvenir on this happy occasion.
In the history of the Cutchi Memons in Cochin, many associations had been formed but all of them became extinct in a short time owing to clash of opinion among the members. But this Association has survived for six decades. All praise to Almighty Allah for its success and we earnestly hope that the Cutchi Memon Association will grow from strength to strength in the years to come and lend its helping hand to the poor and deserving for all times to come.
